General information and Guidelines Committee Chair responsibilities

About ESGE
The European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ESGE) is dedicated to the advance of skilled endoscopic practice through workshops, publication of guidelines, and research. It represents national societies of endoscopy in Europe, the Mediterranean and North Africa.

Eligibility for election as committee chair on the Governing Board
ESGE Individual Members may put themselves forward for nomination. Only members who have paid their annual dues may be considered. Those with trainee status are not eligible to become ESGE committee chairs.

Role of the Guidelines Committee Chair on the Governing Board
As a voting member of the ESGE Governing Board, committee chairs are involved in ESGE’s decision making process.

ESGE is looking for dedicated individuals with proven commitment to ESGE activities. A leading role and authorship in previously published guidelines from ESGE or other Endoscopy Societies is highly recommended before applying for this position.
It is required to be capable of and willing to dedicate a substantial amount of time to this position.

Committee chairs are required to attend three ESGE Governing Board meetings (virtual or face to face) per year, and to participate in regular web-based calls. Attendance is also required at the annual ESGE General Assembly.

ESGE Statutes and Rules of Procedure

§12 (4) Committee Chair elections:
Nominations for committee chairpersons must be submitted in text form to the Executive Committee at least 2 months prior to the General Assembly.

The Executive Committee reviews applications and selects up to four for each Chair position for General Assembly elections. Six weeks before the elections the candidatures for open chair positions are communicated to General Assembly members.

§14 (a) Election and Term of Office of the Governing Board:
The voting members of the General Assembly shall elect Chairs of the Standing Committees at the General Assembly. An individual may chair a specific committee for a maximum of two terms.

Guidelines Committee Chair responsibilities:

  • To develop clinical guidelines in the field of gastrointestinal endoscopy
  • To propose topics for new and/or updated ESGE guidelines
  • To pursue multi-disciplinary collaborations to develop clinical guidelines with other medical societies and/or other international endoscopy societies
  • To provide evidence-based scientific input on ESGE policy documents
  • The committee chair is responsible for organizing face-to-face or online GLC sub-committee meetings as required (one meeting per guideline is foreseen)
  • The committee chair ensures that each guideline is peer-reviewed before publication by two independent reviewers, these may be ESGE Governing Board members or external as required by the field of expertise.
